1 Timothy 4:7

I love this tiny portion of scripture. My apologies for cutting into the verse, it is not my intention to dismantle scripture in way way. But, for me, sometimes I need to get straight to the point. Straight to the guts of something. TRAIN YOURSELF TO BE GODLY. Its so direct; direct is beautiful. The thought that there are intentional actions, purposeful pursuits in our lives that will guide us to being like God, is a beautiful thought.

I am not, for any moment, suggesting that our God-likeness is in our own hands. I would not dare remove this snippet of scripture from the whole of the text. I am merely marveling that in His infinite grace, God has given us directions to pursue Him. That we can move through our life, adding what is of him and editing out what is not. That in the way we train our bodies toward natural habits, we can train our minds and our spirits toward Godly habits. Consider what else Paul had to say when writing to the church in Philippi:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Philippians 4:8

Throughout our days, and our weeks, let’s intentionally choose to develop our lives not following selfish ambition, but pursuing the things of God.
